Classical Guitars: Building the Back (5 of 9)
The
back has the traditional three cross structural braces found on most classical
guitars. Added to this are the four parabolic braces in the two lower sections
of the back. These additional braces add tremendous stiffness to the back
with little weight gain. The purpose is to stiffen the back and use it for
a reflecting plate and minimize the natural tendency of the back to absorb
the sound energy. The sound energy is reflected back to the top where it
belongs. The back plate material is thinned, as normal, so that it can still
contribute to the tone quality of the guitar. The result is an increase
in tone quality, overtone production, sustain and volume. |
